The Hidden Cost of Hiring Locally

Hiring locally can feel like the safest option. You know the market, the time zone is easy, and there is a level of familiarity that comes with bringing someone into your business close to home.

But for many growing businesses, the true cost of local hiring goes well beyond salary.

It’s more than the salary

When you hire locally, the cost of building your team can quickly add up.

Beyond salary, businesses need to consider recruitment costs, onboarding time, payroll tax, superannuation, leave entitlements, equipment, office expenses and management time.

To put that in perspective: hiring a Finance Officer locally on an $80,000 salary rarely stops at $80,000. Once superannuation, payroll tax, recruitment, onboarding, office costs, leave cover and the management time it takes to bring someone on board are all factored in, the real cost of that role can climb closer to $125,000 — well over 50 per cent above the base salary, before the position has even started delivering full value.

Then there is the challenge of attracting and retaining great people in a competitive employment market. Skilled candidates are often looking for higher salaries, greater flexibility and clear opportunities for progression — all of which can make expanding a local team increasingly expensive.

The cost of waiting

The hidden cost of hiring isn’t only financial.

There is also the opportunity cost of delaying growth because you can’t find — or afford — the right person.

Business owners can find themselves continuing to carry work that should be delegated, stretching existing team members or putting important projects on hold simply because hiring feels too difficult or too expensive.

Over time, that lack of capacity can become a barrier to growth. It can also affect the experience of existing employees, who may have less time to develop their skills, take on higher-value responsibilities or progress into more senior roles.

Building capacity differently

Offshore hiring doesn’t mean cutting corners.

When done well, it gives businesses access to skilled, committed professionals while creating more capacity within the local team for leadership, client relationships and growth.

It can also empower onshore employees to work at a higher level. By thoughtfully distributing responsibilities across onshore and offshore colleagues, local team members can step away from work they have absorbed simply because there was no one else available to do it. This creates room for them to focus on the responsibilities where their local knowledge, experience and relationships add the greatest value.

Importantly, this should not be about replacing the onshore team. The strongest models bring onshore and offshore employees together in complementary roles, creating clearer career pathways, stronger support and a more sustainable workload across the entire team.

The key is choosing the right model.

An offshore team member should be properly employed, supported, integrated into the business and given the tools and management they need to succeed. Done properly, they become part of the team — not simply an outsourced resource.

It doesn’t have to be one or the other

Local hiring will always have an important place in building a strong business. But it is no longer the only option.

For growing businesses, the opportunity is to think more broadly about how the team is structured, where different roles are best placed and how to build the capacity needed for the next stage of growth.

Sometimes, the right person for your team simply isn’t located in the same place as you.
